Sensitive teeth: causes and treatment

A sharp, short pain when you drink something cold, eat something sweet or breathe in cold air is called dentine sensitivity. It is very common and in most cases it can be treated simply.

Why teeth become sensitive

Under the enamel there is a layer called dentine, full of tiny channels that lead to the nerve. When dentine is exposed, cold, heat and sugar reach the nerve more easily. This happens with:

  • receding gums, which expose the root of the tooth;
  • worn enamel, from brushing too hard or from acidic food and drinks;
  • teeth grinding (bruxism);
  • cavities or cracked teeth;
  • temporarily, after a whitening treatment or a professional cleaning.

What helps at home

  • Use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth every day for at least two to four weeks.
  • Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, without pressing.
  • Limit acidic drinks such as citrus juices, fizzy drinks and wine, and do not brush straight after them: wait about 30 minutes.

When to see the dentist

If the pain lasts longer than a few seconds, appears without a trigger, wakes you up at night or is limited to one tooth, it may be a cavity, a crack or a nerve problem. These need a visit, not just a special toothpaste.

Sensitivity or a cavity? How to tell

Sensitivity usually causes a short, sharp pain that fades a few seconds after the trigger (cold, sweet, air). If the pain lasts a long time, starts on its own, wakes you at night or always affects the same tooth, it may be a cavity, a crack or an inflamed nerve. In these cases you need a check-up.

Sensitivity after whitening

It’s normal for teeth to feel a little sensitive for a day or two after whitening. A toothpaste for sensitive teeth and avoiding very cold food help. If the sensitivity continues, we’ll talk it through and adjust the treatment.

Habits that help in the long term

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and don’t press too hard.
  • After acidic drinks such as citrus juice or fizzy drinks, wait about 30 minutes before brushing.
  • If you grind your teeth, ask your dentist about a night guard.
  • Have regular check-ups so receding gums are treated in time.

Frequently asked questions

Does sensitive-teeth toothpaste work straight away? No, it usually takes 2–4 weeks of regular use.

How we treat it

After finding the cause, we can apply desensitising varnishes, protect exposed roots, treat cavities or recommend a night guard if you grind your teeth. In the clinic we also use a dental laser, which can help reduce sensitivity.
