The first days after an implant is placed matter for good healing and for the long-term success of the implant. Follow these steps, together with the personal instructions we give you on the day.
The first 24 hours
- Keep the gauze in place with gentle pressure for 30–60 minutes.
- Apply a cold compress to the cheek: 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off, for the first few hours.
- Do not rinse, spit forcefully or drink through a straw. This protects the blood clot.
- Rest, and sleep with your head slightly raised.
- Some bleeding, swelling and discomfort are normal. Take the medication we prescribe exactly as instructed.
What to eat
Eat soft, lukewarm food for the first few days: soups that are not too hot, yoghurt, mashed potatoes, pasta, eggs and fish. Chew on the other side. Avoid hot, spicy, hard or crunchy food, and do not drink alcohol while you are taking medication.
Hygiene after the procedure
From the day after surgery, brush your other teeth normally. Clean around the implant area very gently with a surgical soft toothbrush. Use the mouthwash we prescribe, or warm salt water, after meals.
Smoking and implants
Smoking slows healing and is one of the main causes of implant failure. Avoid it for at least two weeks, and ideally stop completely.
After the crown: daily care
Once the crown is fitted, look after the implant like a natural tooth, or even better:
- brush twice a day and use interdental brushes or a water flosser around the implant;
- come for a check-up and professional cleaning every 6 months;
- if you grind your teeth, wear a night guard.
When to call the dentist
Call us if bleeding does not stop, swelling gets worse after the third day, you have a fever or strong pain, or the implant or crown feels loose.
