Many dental problems do not hurt at first. A small cavity, tartar or gum inflammation can grow quietly for months. A check-up every 6 months finds them early, when treatment is simple, quick and less expensive.
What happens at a check-up
- We look at every tooth, the gums, the tongue and the soft tissues of the mouth.
- We check old fillings, crowns, veneers and implants.
- When needed, we take a low-dose digital X-ray to see between the teeth and under the gum.
- We check your bite and look for signs of teeth grinding.
Professional cleaning
Even with perfect brushing, some tartar builds up where the toothbrush cannot reach. During the professional cleaning we remove tartar with ultrasound, polish away surface stains and show you where to focus when you brush.
Problems we find early
- Cavities: a small cavity needs a small filling. Left untreated, it can lead to a root canal or an extraction.
- Gum disease: bleeding gums are the first sign. Treated early it is reversible. Left untreated, it can loosen teeth.
- Worn or cracked teeth, often caused by grinding.
- Changes in the soft tissues that need to be checked.
Who needs more frequent visits
Some people benefit from a visit every 3–4 months: patients with gum disease, smokers, people with diabetes, pregnant women, and anyone wearing braces or with implants.
Children
We recommend a first visit around age one, and then regular check-ups. Early visits help children feel relaxed at the dentist and let us protect their teeth with sealants and fluoride.
