Professional whitening brightens your smile in a single session. How long the result lasts depends mostly on the first two days after treatment and on a few everyday habits. This is the advice we give our patients at Roma Dental Clinic in Durrës.
The first 48 hours: the “white diet”
Straight after whitening, the enamel is temporarily more porous and picks up colour more easily. For two days, avoid anything that would stain a white T-shirt:
- coffee, black tea, red wine, cola and other dark drinks;
- tomato sauce, curry, balsamic vinegar and soy sauce;
- berries, cherries, pomegranate and beetroot;
- chocolate;
- cigarettes and e-cigarettes.
Choose light-coloured foods instead: rice, white pasta, chicken, fish, potatoes, milk, plain yoghurt, fresh cheese, white bread, bananas and peeled apples. Water is the best drink.
Sensitivity is normal and goes away
Some people feel mild sensitivity to cold or heat for 24–48 hours. A toothpaste for sensitive teeth helps, and so does avoiding very cold or very hot food and drink for a couple of days. If the sensitivity is strong or lasts longer than a few days, call us.
After 48 hours: habits that keep teeth white
- Brush twice a day with a soft toothbrush, and clean between your teeth once a day.
- After coffee or tea, rinse your mouth with water. If you can, use a straw for dark drinks.
- Do not smoke. Tobacco is the main cause of staining coming back.
- Have a professional cleaning every 6 months. It removes surface stains before they build up.
How long does whitening last?
With good habits the result usually lasts one to three years. A short touch-up treatment can bring back the shade when you need it, and we can tell you at your check-up whether it is worth doing.
Veneers, crowns and fillings do not whiten
Whitening only works on natural enamel. Ceramic veneers, crowns and composite fillings keep their original colour. If you have visible restorations at the front, we plan the whitening first and match any new restoration to the new shade afterwards.
