Healthy baby teeth help children eat, speak and smile with confidence, and they keep space for the permanent teeth. A good first experience at the dentist makes every future visit easier.
When to book the first visit
We recommend the first visit around the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. After that, a check-up every 6 months is usually enough.
How to prepare your child
- Talk about the dentist in a positive, simple way. Avoid words like “pain” or “injection”.
- Choose a time when your child is rested, not tired or hungry.
- Read a short story or play “dentist” at home with a toothbrush and a mirror.
What happens during the visit
The first visit is short and gentle. We look at the teeth and gums, check how the teeth are developing and give you advice on brushing, nutrition and fluoride. The goal is for the child to feel safe and to leave happy.
Daily care at home
- Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears, twice a day.
- Use a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice under 3 years, and a pea-sized amount from 3 to 6 years.
- Help your child brush until about age 7 or 8.
- Avoid sweet drinks in the bottle and frequent snacks between meals.
