Almost everyone has bad breath in the morning. When it lasts all day, however, it is usually a sign that something in the mouth needs attention. In about nine cases out of ten, the cause is in the mouth itself.
The most common causes
- Bacteria on the tongue, especially at the back.
- Plaque and food left between the teeth.
- Gum disease, which creates pockets where bacteria grow.
- Dry mouth, from breathing through the mouth, some medicines, or not drinking enough water.
- Smoking, coffee, garlic and onion.
- Less often, sinus, stomach or general health problems.
What you can do
- Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth every day.
- Clean your tongue gently with a tongue scraper or your toothbrush.
- Drink water during the day and chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva.
- Clean dentures, aligners and retainers every day.
- Mouthwash only covers the smell for a short time. It does not replace cleaning.
When to see the dentist
If bad breath does not improve after two weeks of good hygiene, book a visit. We check for tartar, gum disease, cavities and old fillings that can trap bacteria. A professional cleaning often makes an immediate difference.
